Osteopathic Manual Therapy

What Is Osteopathic Manual Therapy?

Evidence-informed, whole-body manual care for pain, mobility, and function.

Osteopathic Manual Therapy (OMT) is a hands-on, non-invasive approach that focuses on restoring motion, reducing tension, and improving the body’s structural and functional balance. It is based on a deep understanding of anatomy, biomechanics, and the interconnected systems of the body.

Unlike therapies that treat symptoms in isolation, osteopathy examines how restrictions in one area can influence the entire body. By improving mobility and circulation, OMT supports the body’s natural ability to self-heal and self-regulate.

Why Osteopathy Works?

OMT is grounded in four key clinical principles:

  • Structure and function are interrelated.
Restrictions in the musculoskeletal system can affect how the body performs and heals.
  • The body functions as a unit.
Pain or dysfunction in one region may originate from another structurally connected area.
  • The body has inherent self-healing mechanisms.
Treatment supports these processes by improving mechanical efficiency and reducing strain.
  • Movement is essential to health.
Loss of motion—whether in joints, fascia, or soft tissue—can contribute to discomfort, imbalance, and compensatory patterns.
Who Can Benefit?

Osteopathic Manual Therapy is appropriate for individuals of all ages and activity levels, including:

  • Adults & seniors
  • Children & adolescents
  • Office workers & individuals with sedentary jobs
  • Athletes & active populations
  • Pregnant individuals (within clinical guidelines)
  • Anyone managing chronic or acute musculoskeletal pain

Each treatment plan is customized to the patient’s needs and goals.

What to Expect During Your Appointment?

A session with an Osteopathic Manual Practitioner includes a comprehensive, whole-body assessment, as symptoms often arise from more than one source.

Your practitioner will assess:

  • Posture and structural alignment
  • Joint mobility and range of motion
  • Soft tissue, fascial, and mechanical restrictions
  • Circulatory, neurological, and visceral influences

Treatment may involve:

  • Gentle joint mobilizations
  • Myofascial and soft-tissue techniques
  • Articulatory techniques within natural physiological range
  • Approaches that support circulation, lymphatic flow, and nervous system function

Sessions are typically 30 or 60 minutes, and treatments are generally gentle and well tolerated. Mild post-treatment soreness can occur and is normal when addressing areas of pre-existing strain.

Conditions Commonly Managed With OMT

Osteopathic treatment may help with:

  • Chronic or recurrent neck and lower-back pain
  • Sciatica, hip or sacroiliac joint dysfunction
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Arthritic mechanical pain
  • Plantar fasciitis, foot and heel pain
  • Tendonitis and repetitive strain injuries
  • Tennis or golfer’s elbow
  • Bursitis
  • Prenatal and postpartum discomfort
  • Non-acute sports-related injuries

Osteopathy does not replace medical care for systemic or inflammatory conditions. When appropriate, referral to a medical professional is recommended.

Is Osteopathy covered by health insurance?

Most extended health insurance plans include coverage for OMT. Patients are encouraged to review their benefits directly with their provider.
